With support from the Blackfriars Overseas Aid Trust (BOAT) NECAT has been providing schools meals for children initially in the barrio of William Fonseca and more recently in El Platanal. The village of El Platanal lies a short distance to the North West of Leon and suffers from an acute level of unemployment or underemployment.

Initially the project provided a supplement to the rice and beans provided by the Education Ministry and offered a nutritious supplement of fruit, vegetables and chicken in order to broaden their diet. More recently due to the non-arrival of the basic government issue foods the project has provided a staple corn drink called ´chichey´as well as tortillas, beans and rice.

Meals are prepared and provided by mothers and other family members early in the day so that none of the children are studying without having eaten.

In August 2010 the project was extended with support from Cheney School in Headington Oxford, from Hermitage SheetMetal Ltd. of Hitchin in the UK and from private individuals. A verandah was constructed using high quality materials supervised by NECAT using locally recruited contractors. The open frame construction provides protection from the elements for the children during their meals, has fixed seating around the periphery of the verandah and plays a dual role for school assemblies as well as for the meals.

A delegation from Cheney School and one of the NECAT trustees formally opened the new structure to a warm welcome from the students and staff of Platanal school.
